Personal Skills

What do ‘you’ know about your self?

Knowledge, the spark to every creation, it can be used to create horror but also lead to amazing good that can change the world. But if knowledge is all you have then it will do nothing for anyone, if you don’t have the skill set to act upon, you are left with nothing but a thought. The skills in certain fields are what creates the products of the future, whether it be skills with technology, athletics, sciences. It is those things that people truly use for creating good. At the end of the day not even that is enough to create greatness, because true talent comes from the mastery of personal skills. Such as time management, goal setting, self motivation as well as team motivation leading into leadership. These are the skills that are the foundation to any great creation.

These fundamental skills everyone says they have, in reality only a few handful truly do. Every one has “good ideas” but they never act upon them. It is the ones with the personal skills in time management and goal setting, for it is them who put there ideas into motion. They are the ones that set time out of there lives to bring a creation or idea to life, with out procrastination. Many people are like minded in creating solutions to problems, some begin to work on them but by the time they put it all together there’s fiver other products. It’s those who had the goal setting and time management skills that did it and are already on the next project.zzz.jpg

Those skills are amazing on there own and can lead to greatness, but no one can truly do it alone. That’s where the skill of leader ship comes into play, a team will almost always be stronger than one. For it is multiple ideas clashing together that some of the greatest innovations of all time have come to be.  But the group most be led by a single mind to keep on track and focused on the goal at hand, even the greatest minds tend to wander. It’s not only leadership that keeps them together, it’s the one hardest personal skill of all to master, motivation. This is the true skill of all, motivation is the inner most foundation of any idea, for if you are not motivated to do it, then it will cease to exist. You will wonder on to another idea you are more motivated on leaving the past to die, and continue till a graveyard of lost ideas lye because you didn’t havezzzzz.jpg the proper motivational skills to complete them.

These personal skills are what make humans great, it’s true any one can throw a football and many are any good at it, but only a few can master it with true personal skills. It is those that have time management skills to make time for practice, those with a goal to climb ever higher and the motivation to make it truly happen and become a reality, instead of a lost dream. It’s these people that have what every sees as basic skills and made as fundamental skills to success.

Personal Time Management Ideas

I have always found the idea of time management very easy, but unfortunately very hard in practice. I was forced to use an agenda throughout middle school, and find myself always creating to do lists, or estimating how long something will take. However, the agenda thing never caught on for me, I get halfway through my to do list and give up on it, and my estimations are normally fairly accurate, but sometimes they can be way off. I have always been told that there is one way for every person to stay organized so that they may use their time wisely, but I haven’t found mine until recently.

The calendar on my phone has been my way of making sure that I am on schedule most of the time. During the year off I took to work my mom had suggested that since our calendars on our cell phones were linked together that I add my shifts to it so she knew when I was at work, or I was able to run errands for her. After a while I was putting everything on my phones calendar, I w

zz.pngas using it for appointments, reminders, when a package I had ordered was arriving and I even started to mark down the days that my high school friends were coming back home for a few days. The reminder pop up notifications I could set up saved me from being late to something I was hooked, until I went back to school.

I need to use my time much more efficiently and begin to plan my days in order to be more productive. Using the calendar on my phone has helped in the past, but I need to begin to do that again. An idea I had was that I would delegate time to work on my assignments on my phone and leave ample time between when I would finish it and its due. I need to push myself to start things earlier and work on them more often. The “I will do it later mentality” I have is not working and the lack of sleep from having to stay up late finishing assignments is detrimental to my health and in class note taking. I have learned the hard way that procrastination is not the way I would like to go forward with.

I took some time to read about procrastination. I always thought that it was something relatively avoidable, however it is a mindset that once you get into the habit of, it can become a chronic issue. I also watched a ted talk on procrastination called “inside the mind of a master procrastinator” by Tim Urban and in it he references something called the “dark playground”. The dark playground is described as being “filled of guilt, anxiety and self hatred”, these all of which I have experienced while procrastinating assignments in the past. I am sick of feeling those things so as previously stated, I plan on rectifying my procrastination as soon as possible with mt phones calendar at my side.

Module 5 is very interesting because it is all about yourself and your own personal skills. I know I have poor time management and procrastinate with most of my assignments. An interesting test I did online can be found here:

http://www.educationplanner.org/students/self-assessments/learning-styles-quiz.shtml .

I did the test and it stated that I was an auditory learner, this was interesting and makes a lot of sense because I love listening to music and I know the words to almost every song I have. Also I liked how after the test is completed, at the bottom it lists many ways you can better your learning as either an auditory, tactile or visual learner. I think these could really help because all throughout high school I would barely study and if I did, I would just read my notes in my head. Knowing auditory learning is my strength could help me this semester with my exams at the end. On the multiple intelligence’s test in module 5, I ended up with the result of “Interpersonal- Self Smart”.

I know that most of my skills stem from hands on work and activity. This is because I have played sports all my life and I like hands on learning. I always enjoyed gym classes the most and took personal fitness in high school. I enjoy my day at school not when I am in class but after class when I get to go to the gym and listen to music while I work out. Goal setting is something I am good at however, I like to set a goal and stick to it until I achieve it. We are always told we can do anything we want and to set our goals sky high but I like to keep them reasonable and achievable because successfully reaching multiple goals in a single year can be very motivating and fulfilling. Motivation has always been a bit of a struggle for me when it comes to school. Most people prefer to do things that evoke immediate or quick feedback, for example you can be motivated easily by a book or game because you can get that satisfaction of finishing them. For school however, it takes very long to complete so motivation can sometimes be lost as it drags on and on. I told myself at the start of every grade of high school that I would do better and stay on top of my work but found myself getting bored halfway through and not giving up but just doing a little less than I should. College is much more of a motivator however because it is all up to me how I do and my parents are spending money on my education so I do not want to let them down.

These personality and learning tests can teach you a lot about yourself because the last time I did one of these was grade 8. Overall I believe that I have the skills to succeed in college and do very well.

Work ethic is important because a strong work ethic means that your work will be better quality and because of that you will become more desirable to employers over the people who just do the bare minimum to get the work done.
